How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill total from the receipt and the number of people paying.
  2. Pick a tip percentage, or choose Other to type your own.
  3. To tip on the food and drink only, choose "The amount before tax" and enter the tax shown on the receipt.
  4. Round the total up for a tidy card payment, or round each share up when everyone pays separately in cash.

Tip formula

Tip = tip base × tip % ÷ 100
Tip base = bill, or bill − tax when tipping before tax
Total = bill + tip · Each share = total ÷ people
Rounded share = ⌈total ÷ people⌉ · Rounded total = ⌈total⌉

The tip is a percentage of the tip base, rounded to the cent, and is added to the full bill (tax included). When you round up, the extra goes to the tip, so the calculator also shows the tip as a percentage after rounding. The ⌈ ⌉ brackets mean rounding up to the next whole unit; amounts that are already whole stay as they are.

Worked example

Two friends have a bill of $84.50 and leave 20%. The tip is $16.90, the total $101.40, and each pays $50.70.

Now three people share the same bill, which includes $6.50 of sales tax, and they tip 20% on the pre-tax $78.00. The tip falls to $15.60 and the total to $100.10, or $33.37 each. If each person rounds their share up to a whole dollar, everyone pays $34.00, the total becomes $102.00 and the tip rises to $17.50, about 22% of the pre-tax amount.

Splitting a bill fairly

An even split is quickest, but if people ordered very different amounts, split by what each person had. Add up each person's items, then apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal. Tax works the same way: each person's share of the tax is in proportion to their items, so everyone pays the same percentage on top of what they ordered. For shared dishes, split those equally first and then add each person's own items.

Tipping tips

  • Quick mental math. For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it: 10% of $84.50 is $8.45, so 20% is $16.90. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure.
  • Check for a service charge. Some restaurants add a service charge or automatic gratuity for large groups. If it's on the receipt, you don't need to tip on top unless you want to.
  • Before or after tax? Etiquette guides differ. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly cheaper; tipping on the total is simpler. The difference is the tip percentage times the tax.
  • Customs vary by country. Tipping expectations differ widely around the world, and in some places a tip is included in prices. When traveling, check local practice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. On an $84.50 bill the tip is $16.90 and the total $101.40. A quick way is to take 10% by moving the decimal point one place ($8.45) and double it.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. An $84.50 bill with a 20% tip is $101.40, so two people pay $50.70 each and three pay $33.80 each.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Both are used, and etiquette guides differ. Tipping before tax is slightly cheaper: on an $84.50 bill that includes $6.50 of tax, 20% of the pre-tax $78.00 is $15.60, compared with $16.90 on the full bill. The difference is the tip rate times the tax.

How does rounding each share up work?

Each person’s share is rounded up to the next whole unit, and the extra goes to the tip. Three people sharing $100.10 would each owe $33.37; rounded up, each pays $34.00, the total becomes $102.00 and the tip rises from $15.60 to $17.50.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country, the service and your own judgment. The calculator offers 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 25% presets and any custom percentage. Check the receipt first: if a service charge is already included, an extra tip is optional.
