There is no single official conversion between US, UK and EU shoe sizes, and brands’ own charts differ. These figures use the traditional sizing formulas; Japan and Mondopoint (ISO 9407) sizes give the foot length itself. Check the brand’s chart, and if you are between sizes, try both.
How to use the shoe size converter
- To start from your foot, stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, and measure between the marks. Measure both feet and use the longer one.
- Enter the length in inches or centimeters to see your size in every system.
- Or choose "A size I wear", pick the system and enter the size to convert it.
- Check the "sizes around yours" table if you are between sizes, and compare with the brand's own chart before buying.
Shoe size formulas
US men = 3 × foot (in) − 22 · US women = 3 × foot (in) − 21
US child = 3 × foot (in) − 9.75 (youth sizes restart at 1 after 13.5)
EU = 1.5 × foot (cm) + 2 · Japan = foot (cm) · Mondopoint = foot (mm)
UK and US sizes count in barleycorns, a third of an inch, so each full size is 1/3 in (8.5 mm) and a half size 1/6 in. They are traditionally based on the length of the shoe last, which is about two barleycorns longer than the foot; the formulas above already include that allowance. EU sizes use the Paris point, two-thirds of a centimeter. Japanese sizes and the Mondopoint system of the international standard ISO 9407 skip the conversion and state the foot length directly. Results are rounded to the nearest half size.
There is no single official conversion between US, UK and EU sizes. Brands use their own lasts and charts, so the same foot can be a different size in different makes. Treat these figures as a well-founded starting point, not a guarantee.
Worked example
A foot measures 26.2 cm, which is 10.31 in. The US men's size is 3 × 10.315 − 22 = 8.94, which rounds to 9. The same foot is US women's 10, UK 8, EU 41.5 (1.5 × 26.2 + 2 = 41.3), Japan 26 and Mondopoint 260.

Tips for finding the right size
- Measure late in the day. Feet swell slightly during the day, so an evening measurement is closer to how shoes feel after hours of wear.
- Leave room in front. The formulas include the usual allowance, but running shoes and boots for thick socks often need more.
- Width matters too. Length-based sizes say nothing about width. US widths use letters (B is the usual medium for women and D for men, with E and beyond for wider feet), and Mondopoint can add a width in millimeters.
- Children's feet grow fast. Measure every few months and check that there is space beyond the longest toe.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert US shoe sizes to UK sizes?
With the traditional formulas, UK adult sizes are one size below US men’s and two below US women’s: US men’s 9 is UK 8 and US women’s 10 is UK 8. Brands’ own charts vary, sometimes by half a size, so check the brand’s chart too.
What is a US women’s 8 in EU sizes?
About EU 39. A US women’s 8 fits a foot of about 9.67 in (24.6 cm); the EU formula 1.5 × 24.6 + 2 gives 38.8, rounded to 39. The same foot is US men’s 7, UK 6 and Japan 24.5.
How do I find my shoe size from foot length?
Measure from the heel to the tip of the longest toe while standing, then convert. A 26.2 cm (10.31 in) foot works out at US men’s 9, US women’s 10, UK 8, EU 41.5, Japan 26 and Mondopoint 260.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint is the international shoe sizing system in ISO 9407. The size is the foot length in millimeters, optionally with the foot width, so a 260/100 fits a foot 260 mm long and 100 mm wide. It is widely used for ski boots, and Japanese sizes work the same way in centimeters.
Is there an official shoe size conversion?
No single one. US, UK and EU sizes grew from different traditions (barleycorns of 1/3 inch and Paris points of 2/3 cm), and brands use their own lasts. Only foot-length systems such as Mondopoint and Japanese sizes describe the foot directly.
