How to use the percent off calculator

  1. Enter the price on the tag.
  2. Enter the percentage off from the sign or coupon.
  3. Read the sale price and your savings. The list under the result shows the same price at 5% to 90% off, so you can compare offers at a glance.

Percent off formula

Savings = price × percent off ÷ 100
Sale price = price × (100 − percent off) ÷ 100

"30% off" means you pay the remaining 70% of the price. Multiplying by the share you pay (0.70) gets the sale price in one step; multiplying by the share taken off (0.30) gives the savings. The two always add up to the original price.

Percent off is always measured from the original price, which is why a markdown is not undone by the same percentage back: an item cut 50% to half price has to go up 100% to return to its old price. And a "1/3 off" sign is 33.33% off, slightly more than the 33% in the list.

Worked example

A jacket is $79.99 with 30% off. The savings are $79.99 × 0.30 = $24.00, and the sale price is $79.99 × 0.70 = $55.99.

Working it out in your head

  • 10% off: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of $60 is $6.00.
  • 5% off: half of 10%. 5% of $60 is $3.00.
  • 15% off: 10% plus 5%: $6.00 + $3.00 = $9.00 off, so $60 becomes $51.00.
  • 20%, 30%, 40% off: double, triple or quadruple the 10% figure.
  • 25% off: a quarter off, so you pay three quarters. 50% off: half price. 75% off: you pay a quarter.
  • Rounding prices: treat $79.99 as $80 for a quick estimate, then subtract a cent or so at the end.

Before you buy

  • Two offers on one item? An extra percentage off a sale price is taken from the reduced price, so the discounts don't simply add. The discount calculator handles stacked and fixed-amount discounts, and works back from a sale price to the original.
  • Add the tax. In the US, sales tax is usually charged on the sale price at the till. Use the sales tax calculator for the final total.
  • Compare unit prices. A bigger percentage off a larger pack can still cost more per item than a smaller pack at full price.
  • Percentages of what? For other percentage questions, such as what percent one price is of another, use the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.70, the share you still pay. 30% off $79.99 is $79.99 × 0.70 = $55.99, a saving of $24.00.

What is 20% off $50?

20% of $50 is $10, so the price after 20% off is $40.

How do I work out 15% off in my head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then add half of that for 5%. For $60: 10% is $6, 5% is $3, so 15% off saves $9 and the price is $51.

What does 50% off then an extra 20% off mean?

The extra 20% is taken from the half price, not the original. On a $100 item, 50% off leaves $50 and 20% off that leaves $40, a total of 60% off.

Is 25% off the same as paying 75%?

Yes. Percent off and the percent you pay always add to 100%. 25% off a $200 item saves $50 and you pay $150, which is 75% of the price.
